Reproductive mental healthcare matters — for everyone.
Crystal Schiller, PhD
I’m a clinical psychologist who helps women understand how hormones affect their mental health. I study how changes in hormones—during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, after childbirth, and around menopause—can change how we feel. My research has shown that these hormone shifts can cause depression in some women, but not others. I also study how hormones affect parts of the brain that are linked to motivation and joy.
I believe everyone deserves access to good mental health care. That’s why I lead projects that make therapy easier to get for pregnant and postpartum women in the U.S. and in Lusaka, Zambia. I also run a public webinar series called Bring on the Heat to share helpful, science-based information about menopause and mental health.
I recently helped write a National Academies report presenting a new vision for women’s health and describing why we need more research funding focused on women’s health research.
I'm passionate about teaching people how hormones affect mood—and sharing tools backed by science that can really help.
